... it came as a surprise to many when the
agency recently issued a notice tentatively
determining that partially hydrogenated oils
(PHOs) are not generally recognized as safe
(GRAS) for use in food.

FDA Proposes New Food Defense
Rule |
As required
by the bipartisan FDA Food Safety Modernization
Act (FSMA), the FDA proposed a rule that would
require the largest food businesses in the
United States and abroad to take steps to
prevent facilities from being the target of
intentional attempts to contaminate the food
supply.

The Grocery
Manufacturers Association, which represents some
of the largest food and beverage manufacturers,
is seeking approval to label foods containing
GMO ingredients "natural", according to a Dec. 5
letter the GMA sent to the US Food and Drug
Administration.
